Rotterdam overview

Holland’s ‘City of Architecture’ has recovered immensely from its partial destruction during WWII and, ironically, it was the actions of the Luftwaffe and accidental bombing of the city by the Allies that has lead to Rotterdam taking on the look it has today. It is a city of contrasts and looks like no other Dutch city, yet the combination of old and new seems to blend well. Of what was destroyed or pulled down can usually be discerned in Rotterdam’s fine collection of museums, such as that of the Rotterdam Art Gallery in the Museum Park. The Euromast Tower is its foremost modern sight while the gargantuan port – Europe’s largest – is good for ship spotters and for those approaching the Netherlands from the sea.
